Author photos by Elena Hmeleva
Created on : October 28, 2021
I did a photoshoot with the amazing Elena Hmeleva in Paris in October 2021 because I needed some updated professional author photos, and these are some of the results. I was quite uncomfortable at first, but she was a pro and got me to relax and enjoy myself. I especially love how Elena managed to evoke the spirit of Paris in so many of the images.

The Joy of Academic Sociality
Created on : January 23, 2014
One of the most delightful things about being a scholar is the opportunity to collaborate with other scholars in one's field. This often means traveling to conferences and seminars. I've recently been thinking a lot about all of the great seminars that I have been a part of over the last few years. Here are photos from a couple of my favorite.

Bulgarian Victims of Communism website
Created on : January 11, 2014
The Bulgarian Victims of Communism Website recently removed some text that I had openly criticized in my work. They also renamed the site from being a Memorial to the Victims of Communism to "Proposography of Political Repression in Bulgarian Territory: 1944-1989." In this gallery, I am preserving the original screen shots from the website before it was changed sometime in late 2013.
Some of the men listed here are responsible for the repression of many Bulgarian Jews and the deportation and deaths of over 11,000 Greek and Macedonian Jews. For instance, Bogdan Filov signed the Tripartite Pact with Hitler, and Petar Gabrovski personally signed the deportation orders for the Jews from Bulgaria's occupied territories to Treblinka. Hristo Lukov and Aleksander Belev were well-known fascists. Yanko Stoyanov and Kocho Stoyanov were responsible for the death of Major Frank Thompson, a British officer who was a prisoner of war and should have been protected by the Geneva Convention.
The Geneva Escalade 2012
Created on : November 14, 2013
It was the year 1602, and the democratic city of Geneva was a precious bauble that had caught the eye of the ambitious Charles-Emmanuel I, the treacherous Duke of Savoy. Geneva was also a prosperous trading center; a valuable prize for any would-be conqueror. In the late 16th Century, Calvin had spread the Protestant “heresy” to city’s noblemen, and Geneva was seen as the “Citadel of the Reformation.” Charles-Emmanuel hoped to please Rome with his capture of Geneva, returning it to the welcoming arms of the Catholic Church.
