I had the opportunity to join in this interesting discussion with Michael Enright of the CBC in Canada. We pre-recorded it in early February when it looked like the German CDU had formed a coalition with the SPD, but it only aired 3 weeks later when that outcome was once again in question. Ah, the fickle nature of politics. I do think the left-right spectrum is a useful shorthand, but it is also very complicated to try to place different political formations on the spectrum. Still, polarization is real, and getting scarier by the moment.
