So let me start this ode by saying that I’ve never met Mike Trobee, nor do I have any financial interest in his business. I am simply a huge fan of his work. Several years ago my partner bought me a handmade fountain pen for my birthday; he ordered it from a specialty site on Etsy because he wanted a fountain pen made of Elder wood (we are Harry Potter fans and he wanted to buy me the pen equivalent of the Elder Wand). He stumbled upon Mike Trobee’s store, and ordered me the perfect Elder Pen (shown on the left).

I loved this pen so much that when my third book came out, my partner ordered me another one, this one with little pheasant feathers embossed on the body (middle). When I started the line edits on my fourth book, I splurged and bought myself another fountain pen with blue roses and ladybugs on it (shown on the right), because it was on sale. Since I do all of the line edits by hand, it is worth it to me to have really nice pens. Writing with fountain pens is such a pleasure, and I have different colored inks in the different pens for different kinds of edits.

I’ve owned quite a few fountain pens in my life, and Trobee pens are not cheap, but they are hand made and one of a kind. He works at his studio in Collerville, Tennessee, and he makes each pen on a lathe with superior pen parts. He uses German iridium point nibs, and each pen is shaped, sanded, and polished by hand.

Since I am in the throes of line editing yet another book, I searched online this morning to see what new pens Trobee might have on offer. Aghast, I found that his Etsy shop was gone, and all fountain pens were “out of stock” on his other website (addictedtopens.com). I surfed the web in a panic, and discovered only one Trobee fountain pen available on eBay. I ordered the turquoise pen as a Christmas present for myself (we writers enjoy little in the way of instant gratification so the occasional impulse buy feels really good). I know it is excessive to have four fountain pens of this quality, but I think of them as pieces of art, which I will one day pass on to my daughter.

 Okay, fangirl rant over.
